What is a great team culture and how can it help your business thrive? Culture is what sets you apart from the competition. It builds stronger, more adaptable teams and creates fiercely loyal customers.
Every business has a culture, whether they know it or not. A culture is shaped by the shared values, beliefs and behaviours of your team. The best leaders know how to build good cultures that stand the test of time. They understand that a dynamic culture makes their business more attractive to potential customers, drives their business forward and engages their team around their brand’s mission.
The value of culture
Culture is your number one tool for creating change and building organisations strong enough to weather any storm. A strong culture enables you to be nimble, dynamic, and responsive to adversity and change. In a year characterised by fluidity and uncertainty, culture is the one constant that will guide your team and your business forward.
Not only is culture a great way of fostering relationships, it’s also a valuable tool for making the right decisions. By acting in line with the shared goals and beliefs of your team, everything you do should further your cause and sit well with the people in your business.
A thriving workplace dynamic also means happier, more motivated employees. When everyone knows what they believe in and exactly why they do what they do, they come to work inspired and act as true champions of your cause. And when people feel like they belong, that they’re contributing to something meaningful, they’re fiercely loyal and will do everything they can to further that cause.
People are drawn to organisations that embody their own goals, values and beliefs. In turn, businesses are more likely to hire individuals who fit in well with their own culture. People who can drive that culture forward. Your own culture is an untapped resource for helping you hire the right people. By only hiring individuals who share your business’s ambitions, beliefs and values, you’re building a group of like-minded people who passionately believe in what you do. Work becomes more than just a job for them– it becomes a way of contributing to something bigger than themselves.
At Complete, we’re big believers in a ‘work from anywhere’ ethos. Balancing life and work is important to us, and it’s something we’ve strived to do since day one. We’ve designed our business around our lives so that we can spend more time with family. We dreamed of building the kind of business where we could drive around Europe during the school holidays and still be able to work and check in with our team. Flexibility and freedom are things we highly value, and as our business grew, one of the amazing parts of having a remote team was the accessibility to a far larger talent pool. We have people in the team based across the UK and Europe, all working as if we were in the same place. Our clients often have no idea that they've been chatting to people in Cornwall, Scotland and Portugal– they just imagined us all to be in one room! It just goes to show that when harnessed well, a remote working culture can do wonders for your business.
Investing in your team
Whatever culture you build, it’s important to keep your team and your clients motivated, engaged and inspired. The key to this is open and frequent communication, both internally and with your clients. Here at Complete, we use a combination of Slack, WhatsApp and Zoom. We check in together on Zoom at least once a day and then in Slack throughout the day, keeping in touch with clients via WhatsApp, CircleLoop and email as and when we need to. It can be easy to lose focus when you're working by yourself for long periods of time, so frequent breaks, changes of scenery and mixing up your tasks (if possible) are all great.
Building the cultures of tomorrow
We’re big believers in technology and its foundational role in building cultures that are made to last. Technology connects us and helps us create dynamic, flexible workplaces built for the future. With the right tech, we can streamline what we do, solve customer problems, and maintain thriving remote cultures.
The best cultures are those that can thrive and adapt, whatever comes their way. They’re constantly looking for new ways of collaborating. They lead with purpose and curiosity, with a focus on innovation and life-long learning. They’re cultures that are flexible, adaptable and responsive to change. Cultures that put people first and seek to challenge the status quo. These will be the cultures that stand the test of time.
